INTRODUCING  DC CAP  SCHOLARS

We provide our scholars with resources, mentorship, and funding to complete college with confidence.

Our Story

Transforming College Access and Completion in D.C.

DC CAP has been a driving force for educational change in D.C. for over 25 years. When we began our work, our focus was high school counseling and removing financial barriers for D.C. students to increase access.

Today, our work continues while recognizing that access isn’t enough. Through DC CAP’s proven model, we are changing individual lives, strengthening communities, and creating a lasting positive impact across Washington, D.C.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

Eliminate the higher education achievement gap for D.C. students by helping them access and attain meaningful college degrees with little to no debt.

Our Vision

A student's personal circumstances should not determine their ability to succeed. DC CAP leverages dollars, connects students to better-match universities, and provides support to ensure students graduate ready to compete in today's economy.

Our Theory of Change

We deliver a transformational opportunity for D.C. students by bundling funding, partnering with high-quality universities, and providing wraparound services. With these supports, every DC CAP scholar can graduate with a college degree and excel beyond belief.

A Proven Path to College Success

Dollars alone do not drive student success. DC CAP’s model goes further—removing financial, academic, and socio-emotional barriers through every stage of a student’s journey.

WRAPAROUND SUPPORT SERVICES

Tailored academic, socio-emotional, financial, and personal guidance throughout the college experience and participation in a community cohort of fellow scholars.

Collaborative University Partnerships

Our network of four-year university partners collaborates in scholar selection, provides year-round retention support, and commits substantial financial resources to minimize student debt ensuring students are set up for success from day one.

Stacked Financial Aid

DC CAP helps make college affordable for Washington, D.C. students by maximizing every available source of financial aid. We combine DC CAP scholarships ($5,000), Pell Grants ($7,400), DC Tuition Assistance Grants (DCTAG) ($10,000), and institutional aid (up to $50,000) to allow D.C. students to attend college with little to no debt – subsequently making higher education accessible for our scholars.

THE 2050 MOONSHOT GOAL

Debt-free, frictionless, & for those in need.
In 2024, DC CAP announced an ambitious city-wide moonshot goal calling for an increase to the 6-year college completion rate to 80% by 2050, effectively eliminating the higher education achievement gap.
We are committed to building a system where every college-ready D.C. student has the financial support, coaching, and community they need to complete college. With deeper partnerships, institutional support, and community commitment, we believe we can scale our model to working for every Pell-eligible student in the District.

College Opens Doors

Low-income students who complete a bachelor’s degree are five times more likely to move out of poverty.

Affording College Shouldn’t Be This Hard

The number one reason D.C. students stop out of college is cost. Inflating expenses and unmet financial need often force students to pause or drop out.

College Graduates Earn More. Especially in D.C.

Across their careers, people with college degrees earn $1.2 million more than those with a high school diploma. In Washington, D.C., those with a bachelor’s degree earn $1.9 million more in lifetime wages than those without one.
