Volunteering Opportunities
Spending time with a high school or college student
can help them build self-esteem, direction and hope for the future.
As a volunteer, you can give to a student and get back the wonderful
satisfaction of knowing that you have touched and made a positive
impact on a young life. If you are interested playing an important
role in a young adult's life, please contact the DC-CAP main office
at 202-783-7933.
Career Speakers Bureau
As a DC-CAP Career Speakers Bureau volunteer, you can help inspire
and motivate high school students to explore different career opportunities
and to prepare themselves for the future by getting their college
degree. Volunteers visit high schools to talk about their own careers
and how a college education played a part of their success. Career
speakers also have the opportunity to serve as mentors and provide
"job shadowing" opportunities to individual students.
DC-CAP encourages individuals in all walks of life and career paths, traditional
or nontraditional -- doctors, artists, small business owners, scientists, teachers,
professional athletes, broadcasters, lawyers, engineers, musicians -- to register
as speakers. Speakers are chosen based on the level of student interest and
schedules are coordinated according to speaker availability. To register as
a DC-CAP Career Speaker, please contact the DC-CAP main office at 202-783-7933
or by E-mail: dccapinfo@dccap.org to
receive the program registration form. You may also download the registration
form in Adobe PDF format.
Alumni Ambassadors
Many students who enroll in college end up withdrawing or dropping
out during their first or second year of school. They are often
faced with financial difficulties, become overwhelmed by schoolwork
and experience feeling homesick.
To help these college students overcome such difficulties, you
can volunteer by becoming a DC-CAP College Alumni Ambassador. As
an Ambassador, you can help support and encourage a student -- or
students -- who attend your alma mater complete their college education.
Ambassadors communicate with students regularly by phone or E-mail
and visit them on-campus at least once a semester. You can provide
support and help them through their challenges by sharing your own
college experiences. You can help build their self-esteem and overcome
obstacles that may come their way.
We invite alumni from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia colleges and
universities to serve as DC-CAP College Alumni Ambassadors. If you are interested
in helping a student get through college and are a graduate of one of the institutions
listed below, please contact the DC-CAP main office at 202-783-7933 or by E-mail:
dccapinfo@dccap.org.
