Donors in the Spotlight
Capital One
Started as an independent company in 1995, Capital One has quickly
risen to the top of the financial services industry in the U.S.,
with a global customer base of 49.2 million and managed loans totaling
$84.8 billion. Through our pioneering information technology efforts,
Capital One is in a prime position to lead the financial services
marketplace through this century.
Their success is directly attributed to our progressive efforts
in information technology, customer acquisition, and customer retention.
Through our proprietary Information-Based Strategy (IBS), we have
the ability to tailor our products to the appropriate customers
as well as ensure that each individual customer's needs are being
serviced efficiently. We also continue to look at ways in which
we can apply our innovative IBS to capitalize on promising markets,
including auto finance, home loans, and patient financing.
Capital One is seeking a high impact partnership with DC College
Access Program including multi-year funding, executive board participation,
and associate volunteer engagement that utilizes business competencies
to address organizational needs.
Capital One has committed to be the presenting sponsor of the DC-CAP
Graduation Celebration events in June 2005 and June 2006.
Carnegie Corporation of New York
The Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie
in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge
and understanding" and has led it to nearly 100 years of work,
to support efforts to improve teaching and learning that have the
potential to make a lasting and long-term contribution to the field
of education. As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation seeks
to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should
aim "to do real and permanent good in this world." While
current program directions have been designed to correspond with
the Corporation's historic mission and legacy and to maintain the
continuity of its work, they are also intended to serve as catalysts
for change. The overall goal is to increase access to quality education
and a rich educational experience for all students that will prepare
them for success in todays knowledge-based economy.
Through that spirit of compassion and commitment to community,
the Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded DC-CAP a major grant
in memory of those who died on September 11, 2001 in New York City,
at the Pentagon outside of Washington, DC and in the fields of Pennsylvania
and in recognition of the potential of tomorrows leaders.
The award honors the memory of members of the DCPS family. The grant
will help support on-going operations and scholarships. On-going
operations include, student and parent counseling, educational planning,
college counseling and retention services. Carnegie scholarships
will be awarded to students enrolling in college in the Fall of
2004. Thanks to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, DC-CAP is
able to provide direct college counseling services and assistance
to thousands of District students.
Sue Schaffer and Laura Stone
"College Counts" Speakers Bureau Coordinators
Career Speakers Bureau volunteers help to inspire and motivate District
of Columbia public high school students to explore different career
opportunities and prepare them for the future by getting a college
degree. Career Speakers visit DC public high schools to talk about
their own success. They also have the opportunity to serve as mentors
and provide job shadowing opportunities to individual students.
When DC-CAP decided to launch the Career Speakers Bureau, Sue and
Laura volunteered to take on the project after reading a Washington
Post article about DC-CAP.
Laura Stone is originally from Mexico, but has lived in this area
since 1976. She graduated from Vassar College and Fordham Law School
and worked as a lawyer for the federal government and a DC law firm.
Laura has served as president and longtime member of the Board of
IONA Senior Services, and as chair of IONA's Citizens Advisory Council/Mini-Commission
on Aging for Ward 3. She is currently on the Board of House of Ruth
and continues to be a member of the IONA Citizens Advisory Council.
Sue Schaffer has lived in the Washington area since 1975. She graduated
from Oberlin College and received a DBA from George Washington University.
Sue taught Organizational Behavior at GWU and worked as a consultant
in that field. She served on the Board of Georgetown Day School
for six years and the Board of the Overlee Community Association
for eight years, two as president, and she chaired the Arlington
County Citizens Advisory Committee for Mathematics.
DC-CAP is grateful for the generosity of individuals like Sue and
Laura.
