Early Preparation
The earlier you prepare for your child's college education, the better their chances of being able to attain a college degree. It is never too early to start. While children are in pre-school, parents should investigate and choose a savings vehicle. There are many options available including educational IRAs, United States Savings Bonds, direct deposit savings accounts, state prepaid tuition plans and the DC-CAP/Riggs Bank College Savings Plans. While in elementary and middle school, encourage your child to pay attention in school, to choose friends who are interested in school, to challenge themselves academically, to develop good study habits and to always make education their priority. Find out what your child is interested in and nurture those interests. Discuss how their interests and college choices relate to future careers. Most importantly, talk to the school counselor and make sure your child is taking the right courses to prepare them to enroll and graduate from college.
DC-CAP's purpose is to not only to assist students in the college process, but also to aid you, as parents and guardians, in supporting their efforts.
